China Receives the First Cherry Express of the 2024-2025 Season
On Sunday,
China received the first vessel of the Cherry Express service for the 2024-2025 season, marking the beginning of a new era for fresh cherry exports. The ship transported over 900,000 boxes of cherries, equivalent to 4,500 tons of fruit.
The vessel departed from the port of Valparaíso, traveling for 21 days on a direct route to reach the port of Hong Kong in China. This made it the first of the 50 vessels expected to set sail for the Asian country this season. At the local market in Guangzhou, one of the 250 containers carrying Chilean cherries was opened. These cherries are considered a premium product and a symbol of good fortune, especially popular in the weeks leading up to the Chinese New Year celebrations.

The container opening ceremony was attended by Iván Marambio, president of Fruits from Chile, and Claudia Soler, executive director of the Chilean Fruit Committee.
Marambio highlighted the current importance of fruit exports, stating, “Today, fruits are the second most exported product from Chile to the world, and the arrival of the first Cherry Express vessel is a milestone that reflects the logistical efficiency and joint effort of the entire production chain. We are proud to continue positioning our cherries as leading products in the Chinese market.”
Increased Production
This season, the production of cherries has increased by 51% compared to the 2023-2024 season, further emphasizing the growth and potential of Chilean cherry exports. China remains the main destination, projected to receive 90% of the exports. Cherries are highly valued in the Chinese market for their quality and cultural significance, especially during the Lunar New Year, which will be celebrated on January 29, 2025.
Soler emphasized the significance of Chinese demand and the sector’s efforts to increase consumption in 26 strategic cities through doubled investment in marketing actions. She also noted that the 2024-2025 season could set a record for cherry exports.
